Well, here we are in December again, with piles of snow to boot!
Here are a few tips on selecting winter boots, now that we are officially in full swing of snow and ice!
1. Function over Fashion. Yes, looking stylish is key, but I am here to tell you there are boots that exist that are fashionable and functional!
2. Select a boot the proper size. A boot too small, or too big means you will have to change how you walk to accommodate the boot. The proper size means you can walk normally, and reduce the risk of falls.
3. Select a boot that is warm! Warmth in Calgary is key! Your feet will be significantly happier if the boot is warm. Again, this means selecting the proper size (too small or too big means the insulation isn’t as advertised). Also look for language on the boot that tells you what temperature they are insulated to (personally, given I am always cold I would pick the one that is rated for the coldest temperatures!)
4. Select a boot with good grip! Typically, a wider sole made of rubber with good tread is a good starting point. These days, there are boots available with extra grip embedded in the sole, and some are even rated based on how grippy they are on ice. You can check out ratemytreads.com to see if the boots you are looking at are good on ice. Mark’s Work Wearhouse is a great store to look at for winter boots that have some fashion and have great warmth and grip. (No, I don’t get sponsored, but I just bought my new boots there-see photo above for their debut- and they have great selection and often have good sales!)
5. Select a boot that is easy to tie. The easier to tie, the more likely it is that you will wear them properly, again reducing the risk of falls.Hopefully if you are in the market for some new boots, you can find these tips helpful. Otherwise, from my family to yours, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and all the best for the new year- 2025 will be here faster than we think!
