Lymphatic Drainage For Your Overall Health

lymphatic drainage for your overall health

A well-functioning lymphatic system is a crucial part of optimum health, yet is often overlooked and forgotten. Since my introduction to the lymphatic drainage course in school, I have had a special interest in and appreciation for the lymphatic system and its techniques. After having recently taken the LDT course @chiklyinstitute, I have a better understanding, and enhanced skill sets to help clients with various conditions.

So, what exactly is the lymphatic system and what does it do? It plays a crucial part in the immune, circulatory and nervous systems. Let’s have a closer look at the role and benefits of the system.

Role:

Immune System

– Defense Mechanism: The lymphatic system helps protect the body against infections by producing and transporting white blood cells, particularly lymphocytes, which are essential for immune responses.

– Filtering Pathogens: Lymph nodes filter lymph fluid, trapping bacteria, viruses, and other harmful substances, which are then destroyed by immune cells.

Circulatory System

– Fluid Balance: The lymphatic system helps maintain fluid balance by collecting excess fluid (lymph) from tissues and returning it to the bloodstream.

– Nutrient Transport: It also assists in the absorption and transport of fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the digestive system to the bloodstream.

Nervous system

-promotion of parasympathetic response: helps to relax muscles and mind, increase the blood flow, helps you to come out of your fight/flight/ freeze mode.

Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage:

– Boosts Immune System: Enhances the body’s ability to fight infections.

– Reduces Swelling and Edema: Helps manage conditions like lymphedema.

– Improves Skin Health: Promotes clearer skin by removing waste products.

– Enhances Circulation: Improves blood flow and reduces fluid retention.

– Aids in Relaxation and Stress Relief: Can have a calming effect on the body.

Application of Lymphatic Drainage:

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A gentle massage technique (usually about 5g of pressure but could be slightly more depending on the body part being worked on) to stimulate lymph flow.

Lymphatic drainage techniques are designed to stimulate the movement of lymph fluid through the lymphatic system, promoting better circulation and helping the body to detoxify and maintain fluid balance. Here’s how it works:

– Gentle Pressure: This specialized massage technique uses gentle, rhythmic, and precise hand movements to stimulate lymph flow.

– Direction: The massage follows the direction of lymph flow, typically towards the heart, to encourage the movement of lymph fluid.

– Specific Areas: Special focus is given to areas with high concentrations of lymph nodes, such as the neck, armpits, and groin.

Conditions treated:

The specific lymphatic techniques application mentioned above are helpful with various conditions and ailments.

-Edemas (swelling) of different origins such as traumatic: tendonitis, fractures, sprains, etc, post-infectious, pediatric; neurologic: facial paresis, multiple sclerosis

-Other conditions that may benefit include, but are not limited to, tooth pain, acne, skin complexion, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation, jet lag, edematous legs, chronic pain, depression, anxiety, etc.

-Lymphedema: edemas where the lymphatic system has been compromised due to removal of certain lymph nodes, radiation therapy, parasites, etc. (lymphedemas are a lot more complicated and therefore need to be worked on by those with specific training. I will be happy to offer this service in the near future upon my completion of the lymphedema course.

Self-care at home for further MLD benefits:

– Exercise: Physical activities like yoga, stretching, and aerobic exercises.

– Hydration: Importance of drinking water for lymphatic health.

– Healthy Diet: Foods that support the lymphatic system, like leafy greens and citrus fruits.

That is a lot of information so, if you have read through everything so far, thank you for your time and patience.
